The West Highland Line is one of the finest panoramic railways in Europe. The single track carves its way through the spectacular Scottish Highlands, with expansive views of barren mountains, rolling heaths, wild rivers, and abundant wildlife. Almost all trains on the line are humble local trains with standard class seating only, but every morning something much more comfortable passes through: The Caledonian Sleeper, the finest night train in regular, scheduled service in Europe. Granted, the bar is quite low, with most night trains several decades old and in dire need of an upgrade. Until that happens over the coming years, this is the best you can get, especially if you travel in the deluxe compartment with Europe’s only double bed on a night train, and priority access to a night lounge and restaurant (something that also has disappeared from most other night trains).
